What’s On – Young Ranger day

One of the challenges when listing events on What’s On Golden Valley is knowing how far beyond the boundary of the Golden Valley and South Herefordshire one should go.  The county is home to four National Trust properties, with The Weir Garden being the most southerly.  I am hoping to be able to share some of the events with you in coming months.

Anyway, today I joined a group of Young Rangers on a day of activities at Brockhampton near Bromyard.  It was really good seeing the youngsters engaging with nature.  The theme of the day was ‘mini-bugs’, and we were looking for beetles and other insects under logs and in trees.  We also went rope walling and tried some musical instruments.

We then made bug hotels with twigs we had collected during the morning walk.  One of the highlights of the day was a bug hunt using a net.  We managed to collect a dragonfly during the exercise, although the dry weather meant we collected more twigs than insects.  With this being a children’s activity, there was the inevitable colouring exercise.  It all went down well with the Young Rangers, several planning to return for more tomorrow!
